Grey Pages

Grey pages are those with too much text crammed onto them, and most people won’t bother to read a text-heavy page, no matter how well written or important the content is. Another aspect of a grey page are headers and sub headings that aren’t easily distinguished from the rest of the text. Headers and sub headings should be used to break up text and allow a reader to quickly scan the page and get a rough outline of what it is about. Lack of White Space

Raster or Vector?

An important consideration in the use of graphics is what format you are going to use, with the most common formats being raster images and vector images. Raster images are formed from pixels (e.g. bitmap) and vector images are formed from mathematically derived points (e.g. scalable vector graphics). The main difference between the two formats is that raster graphics quickly lose resolution when scaled up, becoming obviously pixilated, while vector graphics maintain their sharp edges no matter the scale of resolution. While you can enjoy timber floors, if you still want carpet it is easy to add tasteful rugs, whereas carpeted floors are there to stay. If you have a timber floor then you might want to add some timber elements. Timber elements can be almost anything from a coat rack through to ceiling fans. However, if you are using many different timber elements there are many different colours and shades so you want your timber elements to match.

Using Timber Outdoors

Timber features are extremely popular for outdoor use but they will need to be treated in order to prevent warping, staining and general degradation.

Timber in the Kitchen

Sheds will become run down over time. They are continuously exposed to harsh weather conditions, they are physically strained by heavy tools hung from the walls, and they are basically the least well treated part of any home. Shed and workshop makeovers will be needed around once every 3-5 years and they necessarily need to be done on an epic scale. Here is a simple breakdown on how to give your shed that much needed makeover.

Empty It

To begin with you will need to empty your workshop. This means relocating everything which it houses to another safe location for the duration. Be sure that whilst doing this you leave access to your cordless tools because you will likely be using them. When emptying a shed this will include dismantling your wall mounted hand tools storage because you will need to be able to treat every patch of wood in the same way.

Clean It

No matter how well you regularly clean your workshop after each use, you will find a huge amount of dirt when you empty everything. Clean the shed thoroughly and be sure to degrease any areas which are dirty with WD40.

When cleaning the shed you will also need to clean the outside. Where sheds are built near to walls there is almost invariably a build up of earth and a growth of plants along the side. Remove any excess earth and be sure to get rid of any weeds along the side. It is worth using weedkiller on the area once you have cleared it too so that you can slow the return of plants.

Get on Top

The roof is most likely the place which needs most attention. Each time you do a makeover it is essential to re-felt or maintain the tiles of the roof. Leakages from here will render your shed unusable so spend extra time waterproofing the roof. In addition to this it is also worth replacing the roof every 7-8 years to ensure that it always remains solid.

Strip the Exterior

The exterior of your shed needs to be cleaned, sanded and striped back to its original pre-treatment condition. Be sure to focus on any damaged areas and either replace them or repair the damage at this point.

Treat the Exterior

The exterior will then need to be re-treated. Make sure you utilise a quality outdoor treatment which is able to withstand the weather conditions. Apply several coats of this treatment, allowing it to dry properly in between each coat.

Strip the Interior

There will likely be less maintenance required inside the workshop but this is a good opportunity to replace a workbench top or re-create your storage systems. Once you have repaired anything that needs repairing, clean the interior and treat the wood. When doing so, be wary of the ventilation because it will likely be poor. It is worth applying the same quality of treatment to the inside of a workshop as the outside because it is likely that it will suffer similarly brutal attacks as you work within.
