Using flowers in your wedding ceremony goes almost without saying. Here are some of the most popular flower combinations and colours, regardless of whether your wedding is held in a church or a wedding marquee.

Types of flowers

When it comes to picking flowers for your wedding ceremony, often personal preference makes the choice easy. But sometimes you want to try something different to ensure your special day is unique. A combination of flowers works best as it offers a range of shapes, textures and colours. You can mix flower types or stay with a central theme – it is up to you. Remember that there can also be many variations of the one flower as well. Here are the most popular types of flowers for you to consider:

Roses: The ‘flower of love’ is by far the most common wedding ceremony flower. There is an almost overwhelming choice of roses that have their own signature shape, size, smell and colour.

Gerberas: One of the great appeals of gerberas is that they have that classic flower shape. They are also available year-round, making them perfect for weddings in all seasons. They work just as well in arrangements as they do for table decorations.

Tulips: There are more than 500 different types of cut tulip, which means they are ideal for a flower-themed wedding. They look fantastic in both bouquets and arrangements. While they were once limited to weddings in the cooler months, commercial growers are now able to produce them even in the summertime.

Lilies: These flowers have a beautiful tubular style and long stems. They work well with a mixed bouquet and also make a striking arrangement.

Orchids: One of the greatest attractions of orchids is that they look so delicate. But they are actually robust, which makes them ideal for bouquets. There is an impressive range of orchids as well with many unique shapes and colours.

Hydrangeas: These flowers are gaining in popularity because they look good by themselves and also in mixed arrangements. They have an elegant style and come in a wide range of colours.

Colours

When it comes to the colour of wedding flowers, we think most commonly of white and pink. But don’t feel that you are restricted by these traditional tones. Pick flowers that fit in with the rest of the hues involved in your wedding, such as the bridesmaids’ dresses. Here are some of the most common colours today:

White: There are actually a great many variations of white that can all add a subtle difference. They can be anything from a snow white to an off white. Flowers that show off white best include roses, lilies and tulips.

Pink: The range of pinks is actually quite staggering with everything from deep, dark hues to subtle light tones. Depending on their depth of colour, pink works in most wedding themes. The most popular pink flowers include roses and gerberas.

Red: This is a colour that invokes passion and it can add a striking tone to your wedding flower theme. Deep reds are the most common choice and can come from roses, tulips and gerberas.

Blue: This colour is a perfect partner for white. Once again there are varying shades but the deeper, richer colours seem to be the most popular. Tulips, hyacinths and hydrangeas are great examples of blue flowers.

Yellow: This colour actually works very well on its own in bigger arrangements. It is well accompanied by green, making stems and others additions such as ferns stand out. Roses, tulips, gerberas and even daffodils are great examples of yellow wedding flowers.

We all want a beautifully decorated family home but where do you start? Doing the interior design work for your home may sound simple but once you look at colour schemes, décor, art, pictures and even storage space you will start to understand the immensity of the task.

You will also find that most ideas have already been used and you will want to have a unique home that will surprise your friends and families. These can be simple things such as rustic styled furniture or even family photo prints on glass to have a modern looking home.

When searching for interior design and other home decorating ideas you have to consider an overall style. It is not good to cherry pick bits of furniture you like, a Persian rug and some wall art only to realise that none of it matches. Make sure that you choose all of your furnishings with a consideration of how they will fit in with new and existing elements.

Wall Hangings

Having bare walls is no good if you want to have a truly well designed home. The amount of options available to you these days is staggering, especially in terms of photographic prints:

* Standard photo prints on archival paper

* Canvas prints that look like paintings

* Print on glass photos that you can back light

Just these three ideas in themselves will make your mind run wild with interior design ideas. One of the more popular ideas these days is having a photo wall. So while you may have some photographs and art around your home you should have a specific wall just for your family photos and holiday snapshots.

A Living Home

A living and clean home will add something extra special to a well-designed room. Bringing some life into house involves using the right kind of indoor plants as well as window planter boxes. You can even have a nice little herb garden in the kitchen so that you can always have some fresh ingredients. You can also use pots to add colour a well as your selection of flowering and non-flowering plants.

It is best to use only certain types of plants indoors that will stay green all year round. There is little use for plants that drop leaves creating a mess and even a smell in your home. Nice greenery not only provides a visual effect but it also reduces smell in your home and adds oxygen to your air. Many studies have also found that plants will also clean the air of dust particles and other harmful things.

An Entertaining Space

The most important thing to remember about interior design is to make it flexible and entertaining. This is both for when you have friends over as well as for just hanging out with your family. You should centre your interior design around the need for comfort and usability. It is no good to have a perfectly designed home and not have anywhere to sit, eat and have a laugh with family and friends.

With more and more complicated and high tech devices penetrating our everyday lives we all need more efficient power. From modern ion cell batteries to the possibilities of a portable solar charger, there are now solutions that we could only dream of ten years ago. Unfortunately, despite all of these advances in battery power and accessories modern devices are eating up more and more power so batteries are finding it hard to keep up.

Small portable solar charger (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Batteries are needed for a wide range of uses some of which have been around for some time, like car batteries, through to brand new uses like solar power storage. The idea of a battery is that you can store electrical power produced now for use at a later date. The most widely recognised being the small batteries to use in radios, toys, torches and other products.

The Beginnings of the Modern Battery

The first (viable) electric wet cell battery was invented by Alessandro Volta, hence the measurements of electricity being referred to as volt or voltage. This battery was, by today’s standards, rather primitive but the same principles are still in use in modern batteries. A battery is essentially a way to store energy until you need to use it and the capacity of these batteries can depend on the materials used.

Later, Gaston Plante invented the first rechargeable battery and these are still the same as are used in cars today. Batteries are not to be confused with electrical production. For example, a portable solar charger may produce energy but it still needs a battery to store the power.

Standard Battery Uses

Batteries are used these days primarily in motor vehicles and portable technology such as mobile phones. Modern batteries are much more advanced than older, unreliable models and this is mostly because of the types of technology that uses it. Modern batteries now come in very small sizes yet still make to provide more and more power.

Fortunately, these types of batteries are now also more stable and reliable. However, due to the way all batteries work, they still have a limited life span and will need to be replaced within different intervals.

The Batteries of the Future

What will the batteries of the future look like? If the present trend is anything to go by they will keep getting smaller as well as hold more battery charge for a longer period of time. Figuring out what the batteries of the future will be like is difficult, as it will depend entirely on the type of material that will be used for storing power. It is certain that portable power will keep improving.

Keeping Up with Demand

Batteries seem to keep up with the demand that technology places on them but is there a limit to their uses? It seems that there is not, but new types of batteries will certainly have to be developed. With technology requiring more and more power to run for a longer period of time, batteries will have to continue to improve. The only other option is for software and hardware to become more conservative in its power usage.

Looking for new office space for your business can be a mind-numbing process. The mantra of location, location, location will constantly be ringing in your ears as you baulk at costs and struggle to determine how much space you really need.

This article breaks down the key elements of finding a new space in which to locate your business.

Determine Functions

Before you can even begin to look for office space and the perfect office furniture, you need to consider what the function of your office really needs to be. Here are some questions you should ask yourself to determine what it is that you really need:

Will clients be visiting the office space? If so, do you need a waiting area?

Will you need to give presentations in your office? Will you need audio visual capabilities?

Will your company need to have large internal meetings which involve large numbers of staff? Do you need a boardroom?

Will you need creative thinking areas to facilitate brainstorming?

Will your employees need private offices so that they can have confidential meetings and private conversations with customers?

Will you need to make special arrangements for disabled staff or customers?

Will you need a kitchen area or ‘break room’ so that staff can unwind?

Will noise management be an issue? Do you need to partition the space?

Will you need security doors to protect goods and information? Will you need to refresh your online security systems too?

Answering these questions should give you a good idea about how the office needs to be laid out and arranged. Once you have a list of specifications drawn up from these considerations, it is time to think about size.

How Much Space is Enough?

A basic way to work out how much space is needed in an office is to consider each employee as an amount of space. An average employee, for example, will need around 200 square feet in which to operate their element of business. An executive office, however, can reach up to 400 square feet in size, simply because it needs to look more impressive.

Other elements also need to be considered in terms of space. Cabinets, for example, will require around 7 square feet each to enable easy access and to avoid restrictions of mobility. Person space in meetings and in break rooms can be estimated at around 15 square feet per person.

It is essentially important to think about fire safety when working out the size of an office. An office population will largely be limited by the size of escape routes and exits. You will have to abide by fire safety laws, so be sure to check the capacity of any office before agreeing to buy or rent it.

Prepare for the Move

Once you are ready with a location, it is essential to thoroughly plan the move. A move should not disrupt your business at all so it is important to arrange for the instant transfer of phone lines, internet connections and so on. Aiming to have no disruption at all is essential because clients and customers will be unimpressed if they are unable to contact you for any significant period of time.

As always, plan well and allow a little bit of room for the unexpected.

Dogs these days are more to us than just playful companions, they are also our best friends and members of our family. That is why more and more people are demanding health services for their dogs, at a similar standard to those we expect for ourselves. Billions of dollars are spent every year on veterinary care for dogs, and medical procedures aren’t getting less expensive as medical technology becomes more sophisticated. Nowadays, many people are relying on pet health insurance to foot the bill. The following are some of the basics if you’re looking to get health insurance for your dog.

What Is Covered?

Just like human health coverage, pet insurance for your dog can cover a variety of medical problems, depending on what insurance plan you choose, including:

1. Accidents

As much as you try to prevent them, accidents happen. Having comprehensive pet insurance can save you a significant amount of money if, for example, your furry friend should get hit by a car. Getting the best treatment possible will mean that your pooch can recover quickly without breaking the bank.

2. Illness

Dogs can contract illnesses such as diabetes, infections, back problems or even cancer. An insurance plan will ensure your dog receives comprehensive medical attention, no matter what the illness.

3. Tests and Medications

Dogs often also require x-rays, MRIs and CAT scans to help with diagnosing medical problems. Insurance can cover these costs as well as any hospitalisation and prescription costs.

4. Dental Care

Many insurance plans will cover regular oral checkups in addition to annual teeth cleaning and treatment of infected teeth and gums.

5. Preventive Care

Luckily, most dog owners won’t ever have to deal with serious injuries and illnesses in their pets, but that doesn’t mean regular veterinary visits aren’t imperative. Prevention is the best medicine, and treatments such as vaccinations, physical exams and spaying/neutering can all be covered with the right health insurance.

Choosing the Right Policy

As with all types of insurance, there are different options to choose from depending on the level of care your dog needs. Here are some things to consider:

1. Your Dog’s Needs

The type of insurance your dog needs will depend on many things: Do you have an indoor or outdoor dog? Do you have a puppy or an ageing pooch? What is the breed of your dog? Keep in mind your dog’s current health and his or her physical traits before you choose an insurance plan.

2. Understand the Policy

Before you sign on to any insurance plan, make sure you read the fine print so that you are fully aware of what it includes. The last thing you want is to have a sick dog and an insurance plan that doesn’t cover the illness.

3. Compare Providers

Shopping around for an insurance plan will give you a good sense of the policies that are available. Most pet insurance providers offer information online regarding the various policies they offer, so you can find one that covers all the important things for your pooch for the most reasonable price.

The decision of whether or not to get health insurance for your beloved pooch is yours, but try to consider the situation from your dog’s perspective, too. Veterinary procedures are extremely pricey these days, and you don’t want your dog to suffer unnecessarily, just because you don’t have the means to provide him or her with the best care possible.

More and more people are jumping into the graphic design business due to the availability of software and tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, PageMaker, and more. Taking some Photoshop courses or InDesign training is a smart idea before you get stuck right into it, especially if you want to avoid making the following common mistakes.

Grey Pages

Grey pages are those with too much text crammed onto them, and most people won’t bother to read a text-heavy page, no matter how well written or important the content is. Another aspect of a grey page are headers and sub headings that aren’t easily distinguished from the rest of the text. Headers and sub headings should be used to break up text and allow a reader to quickly scan the page and get a rough outline of what it is about. Your headings alone can determine whether or not you manage to hook a reader, by preventing your page from become too grey.

Lack of White Space

White space breaks up the elements on a page, helping to ease eye strain and add contrast. Without white space, a page can look too cluttered and leave the viewer confused as to where to start looking or reading. In addition, without enough white space, important information can get lost in the visual noise, undermining your efforts all together.

Mismatched Graphics

Another common mistake by amateurs or designers in a hurry is the use of mismatched graphics or pictures. To create a unified and coherent look, your graphics should be in the same style or share a common characteristic that ties them together. So don’t mix clip art images with photographs or line drawings unless you have a very good reason for doing so and can pull it off in an attractive way.

Too Many Font Types

Having different fonts in a design or website is not bad, but using too many can make it hard on the viewer and even detract from the overall message, especially if there seems to be no rhyme or reason to their use. A good rule is to have no more than two types of fonts in a design, and in addition, make sure the fonts used are appropriate to the design or website; for example using an informal or handwritten font may not be suitable for a financial website.

Too Many Images

After mismatched graphics, the next most common graphic design mistake is using too many graphics, especially clip art. Make sure that the graphics present in your work have a reason to be there and are not used just to fill empty space.

Raster or Vector?

An important consideration in the use of graphics is what format you are going to use, with the most common formats being raster images and vector images. Raster images are formed from pixels (e.g. bitmap) and vector images are formed from mathematically derived points (e.g. scalable vector graphics). The main difference between the two formats is that raster graphics quickly lose resolution when scaled up, becoming obviously pixilated, while vector graphics maintain their sharp edges no matter the scale of resolution. Whatever format you decide on, be consistent.

One thing that everyone can agree on when it comes to stock market investing is that it’s very tricky to do it right. Since no one can guess with any certainty what the markets are doing at any particular moment (or what they will do in the future), then investing in shares can be quite risky. If played right, the stock market can make you a nice profit over time, but if you are unsure or have less financial wealth to fall back on, then you should try and play it safe. The following are some ways that you can play your cards conservatively to ensure more steady returns on your investments.

Choose Wisely

Different stocks have different characteristics, and stocks with certain features have been proven to rebound faster following a market downturn, which will help minimise short-term losses. Choose stocks with the following characteristics: a high return on equity, share growth that provides stable earnings, low historical price earnings ratio and low debt to equity ratio.

Long-term Investing

Decide whether you want your stock investments to provide you with income or growth. Short-term investments can be turned around and cashed out quickly, giving you the opportunity to reinvest the principle. Long-term investments, on the other hand, grow at a slower pace, but the exponential increase in interest makes it worth the wait. If you are trying to play it safe, the long-term approach is generally the safer one.

Spread the Risk

By diversifying your investment portfolio, you can significantly decrease the amount of risk that each of your investments presents. Basically, having a diverse portfolio means that you hold a sufficient amount of stocks that, if a downturn did occur, you will have stocks to fall back on. Diversification among stocks is extremely useful in minimising your risk, and you can extend this safety net even further by holding a proportion of your capital in other asset classes as well, such as real estate, cash and bonds.

Limit the Investment

In case of an unexpected market crash (and be assured, they happen pretty regularly), you will need to make sure you have finances to fall back on. Conservative investors generally limit the money they put into investments to a percentage of their net worth. Generally, 20% is a pretty safe figure, but it always depends on how much risk you are willing to take, and what your net worth is. For some people, a percentage as low as 10% is all they are willing to risk, but you should choose your number based on how well you will be able to sleep at night should the market take a spill.

Do Your Research

When it comes down to it, safe investing is all about having some clue as to what you’re doing. This is why it’s so important to do your due diligence when it comes to deciding which stocks to buy. Before investing in any company, research them thoroughly to get an idea of the potential dividends. Only invest in companies that have a history of making money for stockholders and ones that have steady, long-term growth. Skimping on the research is often what gets investors into trouble, so you should also visit your financial planner frequently to get advice.

As you get older, your health slowly but surely starts to deteriorate. Depending on what you are doing to help protect it, you can extend the time that you are able to enjoy full health. It doesn’t take much to protect your health, mostly it involves a commitment to do so. Make sure that you get the most out of your senior years and enjoy them in the best possible state of health.

Watch What You Eat

While you may be able to get away with eating unhealthily when you are young, your body is far less forgiving as you get older. If you hope to have a decent quality of life as you head into your golden years, get on top of your diet. Your body needs vitamins and minerals more than ever, to help hold off the natural effects of aging, so give your body a chance and put some decent food in there.

Exercise

Staying active is a key part of being healthy when you age, and can also add to the amount of time that you have left to live. Even if you are just going for a good long walk a few times a week, you will be doing wonders for your health.

Health Insurance

Even if you are doing everything possible to protect your health, accidents happen and it is easy to be struck down by a cold or flu that you have caught from a friend. That is why having health insurance is so important, especially in old age, because a broken bone or a hospital stay could prove extremely expensive. If you no longer have an income, you may be left without the care that you need unless you are insured. If you don’t have life insurance yet, you should start thinking about getting some pretty soon.

Security

Getting older mean you are more vulnerable, and it is possible that that will be taken advantage of, even in your own home. Investing in some security upgrades is a fantastic way to protect your health, security and peace of mind. Even security screens on your doors and windows might be enough to prevent a face-to-face encounter with an intruder in your home. Personal alarm systems are also a good investment, as you will be able to call for help should you have to deal with a threat, or if you fall and can’t get up.

Upgrades At Home

As you get older, there is a far greater chance that you may slip, fall or otherwise injure yourself at home. So, as you start to notice that you aren’t quite as strong or fleet-footed as you may have once been, consider having safety bars, railings and rubber grip mats for the bathtub installed. Your upgrades may save you having a fall and ending up in hospital.

If you have lived with carpet for many years and seen someone’s home using timber then you will understand the huge difference. While you can enjoy timber floors, if you still want carpet it is easy to add tasteful rugs, whereas carpeted floors are there to stay. Wooden floors can look great with other accessories such as timber ceiling fans with lights and other wooden furniture.

If you are lucky then you might be in an older house which could mean that you have pre-existing timber floors. This is like revealing brick work in order to use it in your interior design. However, if you have concrete flooring then you can still easily add wooden flooring. In fact, you can (with the right budget) even add wooden walls to your entire home.

Revealing Pre-Existing Timber Floors

Revealing hidden timber floors is just like looking for buried treasure. You get to rip up your carpet, pull up all the underlay, throw it into the skip bin and be faced with the long hidden wooden flooring! With the right equipment you can then clear up the floor quite easily.

Older wooden floors will often be stained if they have had carpet on top of them for some time and many will be uneven and have gaps. This can be fixed firstly with a bit of sanding with an industrial sander or having professionals come and smooth out the floor. Then you will have to fill in any gaps and dents in the flooring.

Finally, polish up that wood floor for an amazing new look and it will be sealed and ready to be treated every so often to stay nice and shiny.

Installing Timber Elements

If you have a timber floor then you might want to add some timber elements. Timber elements can be almost anything from a coat rack through to ceiling fans. They create an air of class as well as a natural look for your home. However, if you are using many different timber elements there are many different colours and shades so you want your timber elements to match.

Using Timber Outdoors

Timber features are extremely popular for outdoor use but they will need to be treated in order to prevent warping, staining and general degradation.

Timber decks look amazing and they create a more easily maintained entertainment space and are often being used to replace some grassed areas. It is much easier to use some decking oil every six months rather than mow the lawn every week!

Timber in the Kitchen

Timber in the kitchen can sometimes look a little dated but if you use it in combination with other modern elements it can look amazing. Ornate kitchen cabinets are out but chunky timber cupboards look great and wooden bench tops can be amazing. However, some of these options will be more costly than traditional kitchen options such as stainless steel or tiles.

Timber in the Bathroom

Timber in the bathroom can work well but like outdoor timber it needs to be done carefully. Due to the amount of moisture in a bathroom there is a huge risk of warped timber and even moisture rot. It is best to consult with a professional before installing anything timber in a wet area.

Sheds will become run down over time. They are continuously exposed to harsh weather conditions, they are physically strained by heavy tools hung from the walls, and they are basically the least well treated part of any home. Shed and workshop makeovers will be needed around once every 3-5 years and they necessarily need to be done on an epic scale. Here is a simple breakdown on how to give your shed that much needed makeover.

Empty It

To begin with you will need to empty your workshop. This means relocating everything which it houses to another safe location for the duration. Be sure that whilst doing this you leave access to your cordless tools because you will likely be using them. When emptying a shed this will include dismantling your wall mounted hand tools storage because you will need to be able to treat every patch of wood in the same way.

Clean It

No matter how well you regularly clean your workshop after each use, you will find a huge amount of dirt when you empty everything. Clean the shed thoroughly and be sure to degrease any areas which are dirty with WD40.

When cleaning the shed you will also need to clean the outside. Where sheds are built near to walls there is almost invariably a build up of earth and a growth of plants along the side. Remove any excess earth and be sure to get rid of any weeds along the side. It is worth using weedkiller on the area once you have cleared it too so that you can slow the return of plants.

Get on Top

The roof is most likely the place which needs most attention. Each time you do a makeover it is essential to re-felt or maintain the tiles of the roof. Leakages from here will render your shed unusable so spend extra time waterproofing the roof. In addition to this it is also worth replacing the roof every 7-8 years to ensure that it always remains solid.

Strip the Exterior

The exterior of your shed needs to be cleaned, sanded and striped back to its original pre-treatment condition. Be sure to focus on any damaged areas and either replace them or repair the damage at this point.

Treat the Exterior

The exterior will then need to be re-treated. Make sure you utilise a quality outdoor treatment which is able to withstand the weather conditions. Apply several coats of this treatment, allowing it to dry properly in between each coat.

Strip the Interior

There will likely be less maintenance required inside the workshop but this is a good opportunity to replace a workbench top or re-create your storage systems. Once you have repaired anything that needs repairing, clean the interior and treat the wood. When doing so, be wary of the ventilation because it will likely be poor. It is worth applying the same quality of treatment to the inside of a workshop as the outside because it is likely that it will suffer similarly brutal attacks as you work within.
